In the fast-paced world of 2025, where camera sensors are pushing hundreds of megapixels and AI autofocus can track a bird’s eye through a dense hurricane, there is a growing counter-movement. We are seeing a massive resurgence in “Vintage Digital”—photographers looking back at the CCD sensors and early CMOS mirrorless cameras of the 2010s.
Today, I’m putting aside the modern behemoths to revisit the camera that arguably started the retro-mirrorless revolution: the Fujifilm X-T1.
Released way back in 2014, this camera is now over a decade old. In tech years, that’s ancient. It’s a dinosaur. But does it still have teeth? I took this 16-megapixel veteran out into the Finnish archipelago to see if the original X-Series magic is still alive, or if nostalgia is clouding our judgment.
The Shift: From DSLR Heavyweights to Mirrorless Compacts
For years, my daily drivers have been chunky, reliable DSLRs like the Nikon D700. These are tanks—heavy, loud, and purely optical. picking up the X-T1 in 2025 feels like picking up a toy in comparison, but in the best way possible. It is small, dense, and predominantly tactile.
The X-T1 was Fujifilm’s first weather-sealed X-mount camera, featuring that iconic ISO dial, shutter speed dial, and exposure compensation dial right on top. It invites you to change settings before you even turn the camera on.
The Gear Setup
For this field test, I wasn’t just relying on the body. Glass matters. I paired the X-T1 with:
* Fujinon XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4: The “kit lens” that is far better than any kit lens has the right to be.
* Fujinon XF 55-200mm: For reaching across the water.
* Fujinon XF 16mm f/1.4 R WR: A legendary wide-angle prime for dramatic landscapes.
Field Test 1: Chasing the Sunset & “Fuji Colors”
One of the biggest selling points of Fujifilm cameras, even in 2025, is their color science. The X-T1 houses the 16MP X-Trans CMOS II sensor. Unlike the modern 40MP sensors in the X-T5 or X-T6, this older sensor has a certain grit and character to it.

I headed out to the rocky coast as the sun began to dip. The goal was simple: capture the atmosphere. The first thing you notice when switching from an optical viewfinder (OVF) to an electronic viewfinder (EVF) from 2014 is the reality check.
The EVF Experience
In 2025, EVFs are indistinguishable from reality. On the X-T1? It’s… okay. It was revolutionary at the time for its size (0.77x magnification), but the refresh rate and resolution definitely show their age. However, the ability to see your exposure in real-time is still the “killer app” of mirrorless cameras. You know exactly what you are going to get before you press the shutter.
Dynamic Range and Patience
Shooting the sunset required patience. The sun lingered on the horizon, creating harsh contrast. Older sensors don’t have the insane shadow recovery of modern BSI sensors, so you have to be more disciplined with your exposure. I found myself under-exposing slightly to preserve the highlights in the water and sky.
The results? The JPEGs straight out of the camera (SOOC) are still beautiful. The Velvia simulation pops, and the Astia gives a lovely softness to the sunset gradients. Even though I had some initial setup hiccups (accidentally shooting JPEG only when I wanted RAW), the files held up remarkably well.
Field Test 2: Black & White Texture
Returning to the same location the next day, I switched gears. The light was harsh, the sun was high—terrible conditions for color landscape photography. This is where Black & White shines.
I swapped to the Fujinon XF 16mm f/1.4, a lens that allows for incredible close-focus wide-angle shots.

The archipelago is full of gnarled, dead pine trees—skeletons of nature that have been battered by the wind. These structures are perfect for testing the micro-contrast of the X-Trans sensor.
While the X-T1 lacks the famous “Acros” film simulation (which arrived with the X-Pro2/X-T2), the standard Monochrome simulation is robust. I spent time trying to replicate a shot of a specific “famous” dead tree I’ve photographed before.
Here lies the challenge of creative photography: sometimes you try to force a composition because you’ve seen it work before, but the light just isn’t right. I struggled to find a new angle on the old subjects. However, the process of walking around with a lightweight prime lens on a small body was liberating compared to lugging a heavy DSLR backpack.

The Ugly Truth: 10 Years of Decay
We need to talk about the physical reality of buying a used X-T1 in 2025. While the magnesium alloy body is tough, Fujifilm had a serious manufacturing defect with the rubber grips during this era.
During my shoot, the rubber thumb rest and the front grip started peeling off. It gets loose, expands, and—worst of all—the glue underneath turns into a sticky, gooey mess.

This is a tactile nightmare. You’re holding this precision instrument, but your fingers are sliding around on degrading adhesive. If you buy one of these today, budget for some strong glue or replacement rubber skin. It’s not a dealbreaker for the image quality, but it ruins the “premium” feel significantly.

What I Missed from my DSLR
Comparing this to my Nikon D700, the X-T1 feels… experimental. The buttons on the back are mushy (the D-pad is notoriously bad on the X-T1). The interface, while retro-cool, isn’t as “muscle-memory” efficient as a pro-body Nikon. The camera feels less like a tool and more like a gadget.
What I Loved
The size. The weight. The look. There is an emotional connection to the X-T1 that is hard to quantify. When you nail focus (which is slower, by the way) and you hear that quiet shutter click, it’s satisfying. The 16 megapixels are plenty for social media and even moderate prints. We often overestimate how much resolution we actually need.

If you are a beginner photographer looking for a cheap entry into the Fujifilm ecosystem, the X-T1 is a risky but rewarding buy. It’s risky because of the peeling rubber and the sluggish autofocus compared to modern standards.
However, it is rewarding because it forces you to slow down. It gives you physical dials for ISO, Shutter, and Aperture, teaching you the exposure triangle intuitively. And the price? In 2025, these are a bargain compared to the skyrocketing prices of the X100 series.
